39. RUSS FILBECK SIDE CHAIR |

Master chairmaker Russell Filbeck made this three-slat side chair especially for the Winter Weekend. The Appalachian ladder-back chair is 39 inches tall with a 19 x 20-inch seat. The seat is made from the woven inner bark of a hickory tree and is the same material President Carter uses in his ladder-back chairs. The slats are engraved with the Carter Center motto, “Waging Peace, Fighting Disease, Building Hope.” Filbeck teaches woodworking at Palomar College in San Diego and is the author of “Making Ladder-Back Chairs With Russ Filbeck,” for which President Carter wrote the foreword.

Master chairmaker Russell Filbeck made this replica of an Appalachian-style ladder-back rocking chair especially for the Winter Weekend. The cherry, six-slat rocking chair is 44 inches tall, 26 inches wide, and 44 inches deep and is a reproduction of one that Filbeck made for President Carter. The hickory bark seat is woven in a herringbone pattern and finished with four coats of oil and paste wax. The slats are engraved with the Carter Center’s motto, “Waging Peace, Fighting Disease, Building Hope.” Filbeck teaches woodworking at Palomar College in San Diego and is the author of “Making Ladder-Back Chairs With Russ Filbeck,” for which President Carter wrote the foreword.
